The Institute of Medical Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBM PAN) is a leading research center in biomedical sciences, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of physiological and pathological processes and on medical biotechnology. Established in 2008 as the successor to the Centre of Medical Biology PAN, the Institute conducts advanced basic and applied research in fields such as medical biology, pharmacology, microbiology, molecular virology, molecular biology, microbial genetics and physiology, immunology, medical chemistry, and DNA structure and function.
Its activities include studies on organism–environment interactions, pathogen–host relationships, and the development of new methods for prevention, diagnostics, and treatment of infectious and lifestyle diseases. IBM PAN holds a “Category A” scientific rating, has the right to confer doctoral degrees in medical sciences, and co-runs the BioMedChem Doctoral School with the University of Łódź.
The Institute manages a unique national research infrastructure for cell culture collections, bacterial and viral strains, and recombinant lines, and is the Polish coordinator of the international EU-OPENSCREEN consortium for chemical biology screening platforms.
