Działa na rzecz wspierania i promowania szeroko pojętych badań i edukacji bioinformatycznej w Polsce. Celem Towarzystwa jest zrzeszanie i wspieranie interakcji między naukowcami zainteresowanymi bioinformatyką\, pochodzącymi z różnych środowisk naukowych.  \n\n\n\nSympozjum PTBI jest coroczną konferencją\, która jest głównym wydarzeniem organizowanym przez Polskie Towarzystwo Bioinformatyczne i gdzie nacisk kładziony jest na promowanie badań młodych naukowców poprzez prezentacje ustne i plakatowe.
